Emotion Is Not the Problem – It’s What You Do With It
Apr 07, 2026
There was a line we came across recently in a book that really stood out, and it is something we find ourselves talking about often with clients when it comes to emotional mastery. The quote was from neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, and it said:
It is emotion that allows you to mark things as good, bad, or indifferent.
Now, we are not disagreeing with that statement. In fact, we agree with it completely, but only up to a point. It accurately describes where humanity currently is in terms of emotional development, but it does not describe what we are capable of becoming.
Where Humanity Currently Operates
If you look at the way most people move through life, that quote makes perfect sense. Emotions are being used as the primary tool to navigate reality. We feel something, and based on that feeling, we decide what is good, what is bad, and what we should do next.
This is how we have collectively programmed ourselves to operate. We rely on anxiety, fear, frustration, and even hatred as signals to guide our decisions. It feels normal because it is familiar, but that does not mean it is the highest level we can function at.
The reality is that while our intellectual capacity has evolved rapidly, our conscious awareness has not kept pace. We have built incredible external systems, technologies, and conveniences, but internally, we are still largely running on unconscious patterns.
What Happens Before Emotion
What is often missed in this conversation is that something happens before emotion ever arises. Emotion does not just appear out of nowhere. If you look at the word itself, e-motion, it implies movement, something being stirred within the system. That movement can only happen if there is something already there to be moved.
As you move through your day, you are constantly encountering situations, and in each of those moments, you are making subconscious judgements. These judgements happen so quickly that you do not even realise they are taking place. They are based on your past experiences, your conditioning, and the belief systems you have accumulated over time.
Once that judgement is made, the corresponding emotion is triggered. The emotion is not leading the process, it is responding to the judgement that has already occurred.
When Emotion Takes Control
The problem arises when we allow those emotions to dictate how we navigate our lives. If we let emotions decide what is good, bad, or indifferent, then we are effectively handing over control to our subconscious programming. In simple terms, the tail starts wagging the dog.
At that point, we are not consciously choosing how to respond to life. We are reacting based on patterns that were formed in the past. Those patterns may not even be relevant anymore, but they continue to run because they have never been brought into awareness.
This is why the same emotional reactions repeat again and again. It is not the situation that is causing the reaction. It is the programme behind the scenes.
Taking Back the Driving Seat
If we want to move towards emotional mastery, we have to take the next step beyond simply accepting that emotions guide us. We have to begin observing them instead.
Instead of saying “I am angry” or “that makes me anxious,” we can start to shift the language and the perspective. We can say “there is anger” or “there is anxiety present in the system.” This might seem like a small change, but it creates distance between you and the emotion.
That distance is everything.
When you are observing an emotion, you are no longer fully identified with it. You are not inside it, you are looking at it. From that position, the emotion cannot take control of your behaviour in the same way. This is where you begin to move the emotion from the driving seat into the passenger seat, and you take back control.
The Power of a New Choice
Once you are in that observer position, you unlock something incredibly powerful, the ability to choose. Instead of reacting automatically, you can decide how you want to respond.
You can acknowledge the emotion and recognise that it is something you are carrying. You can even feel gratitude for it, because it is showing you something that exists within your system.
From there, you can make a new choice. You are no longer bound to repeat the same reaction. You can begin to release the emotional charge that has been driving that pattern.
This is where real change begins.
Rewiring the System
What we are doing in this process is bringing conscious awareness into what was previously unconscious. The reactions that used to happen automatically are now being seen, acknowledged, and changed.
The underlying cause of those reactions is pre-programming. It comes from your past, from your formative years, from experiences that have shaped how you interpret the world. By becoming aware of it, you begin to loosen its hold.
You stop being controlled by it, and you start working with it.
The Beginning of Emotional Mastery
This shift, from reacting to observing, from being controlled to choosing, is the beginning of emotional mastery. It is not about suppressing emotions or getting rid of them. It is about understanding them and no longer being ruled by them.
When enough people begin to operate in this way, something bigger becomes possible. Conscious evolution is no longer just an idea, it becomes a reality. The way we experience life changes, and the way we interact with the world changes with it.
