You Are the Answer – Always Have Been

One of the most common questions we get asked in client sessions is this: what do I need in order to manage or gain control over my emotions? The answer we give is always the same, and it is not something new, complex, or external. The answer is you.

You are the answer to managing your emotions. You are the answer to mastering your emotions. You always have been, and you always will be. The only thing that tends to be missing is the awareness of how that is actually playing out in your life.

Everything You Experience Is Internal

If we really slow this down and look at it properly, it becomes clear that every experience you have ever had has been internal. It may feel like the world is happening outside of you, but your experience of it is always taking place within you.

When you look at something as simple as a tree, it appears as though the tree is out there in front of you. But what is actually happening is light is entering your eyes, being processed by your system, and then rendered internally as an image. On top of that, you have years of learning attached to that image, including language, meaning, memory, and association.

The same applies to everything. Every sight, every sound, every smell, every taste, and every thought has been experienced internally. The entire seat of your human experience is within you.

Emotions Are the Lens

Once we understand that, we can begin to see the role that emotions play. Your emotions are not just reactions. They are the lens through which you experience what you call reality.

There is a chain reaction that takes place. Something happens in your external world, you internalise it, and then almost instantly, you place a judgement on it. That judgement is based on everything you have learned, experienced, and stored up until that point in your life.

This happens so quickly that it feels automatic. It feels like you do not have a choice in how you feel, but in reality, what is happening is you are running a set of pre-existing programmes that dictate how you respond.

Those programmes then generate the emotional response.

The Illusion of “It Makes Me Feel”

A good example of this is when someone says something like, “that situation makes me anxious.” On the surface, that feels true. But when you break it down, it is not actually the situation creating the emotion.

What is happening is the situation is triggering a pre-existing pattern. The judgement you place on that situation, based on your conditioning, is what generates the emotional response.

Take something like the London Underground. One person can travel on it with no issue at all, while another experiences anxiety at the thought of it. The Underground itself is not causing the anxiety. The anxiety is coming from the internal judgement that has been programmed into that person’s system.

A more accurate statement would be that we are subconsciously choosing fear as an internal response based on our past experiences.

Moving Out of Autopilot

If you want to step into emotional mastery, the key shift is moving out of autopilot and into conscious awareness. Autopilot is simply running those old programmes without questioning them.

The moment you begin to observe your emotions, everything starts to change. When you observe an emotion, you are no longer fully identified with it. You are no longer completely inside it. You are one step removed, and from that position, you have a choice.

That choice is where your power sits.

A Simple Three Step Process

There is a very simple process that you can begin applying immediately to start taking back control of your emotional state.

The first step is to become the observer of your own internal emotions. This means catching yourself in the moment when a negative emotion begins to arise and recognising that it is happening.

The second step is to make a note of it. This can be as simple as opening the notes app on your phone and writing down the time, the situation, and what you think the emotion is. This might feel basic, but what you are doing is interrupting the automatic pattern and bringing awareness into the process.

The third step is to apply gratitude. This is where you consciously shift your relationship to the emotion. Instead of resisting it or becoming it, you acknowledge it and say, even internally, “thank you for bringing this to my awareness.”

What you are doing here is recognising that the emotion is showing you something that you are carrying. It is not the problem. It is the signal.

From Reaction to Creation

When you begin to practise this consistently, something powerful starts to happen. You move from being someone who is led by their emotions to someone who is consciously choosing how to respond.

Instead of relying on past experiences to dictate your present, you begin to create new responses in the moment. You stop recycling the same patterns and start stepping into a more conscious way of living.

This is where real change happens. Not by controlling emotions, but by understanding them and choosing differently.
